Despite my political views, as a strict Dolphin loyalist I find it remarkable that Nick Saban, and Jason Taylor, turned down dinner with President Bush Sunday night. The two active Dolphins said team activities tied to the beginning of training camp overruled a night at Joe’s Stone Crab with the Commander in Chief.
If you want to encapsulate how hardcore Saban is I think this is it. Unless he’s a raging liberal, and I have no indication he is, the fact that he turned down a high-profile and historic meeting speaks volumes to his team, the fans and everyone in the NFL. The guy has one goal and it has nothing to do with stone crabs.
I’m still unclear on how the President had time to dine with Dan Marino, Nick Buoniconti (shock that he didn’t turn down a free dinner and photo op), Jim Kiick, Jim Mandich and Andy Garcia among others. Maybe Bush had some insight into Castro’s illness and was celebrating. I don’t know.
Anyway, let’s all hail Nick Saban. Or at least give him a high five for staying unusually focused.
